Cream colored handwoven shawl- raw silk and cotton.  Woven by Master Weaver Mary Jane Thorne, wife of retired University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member, Dr. Jim Thorne.  The Gebrochene threading is from the manuscript of Timothy Bent dated 1778.   His weaving pattern book was discovered in Blaise Castle near Bristol, England.  He named the pattern “The Rose and Crown”.Value:  $188.69

VARIETAL INFORMATION: This shy-bearing Vignoles (veen' yole) grape has become the jewel of Missouri white wines. The difficult-to-grow variety achieves its richest complexities in the warm and sunny vineyards of Missouri. Our 2010 vintage was produced from a specially selected parcel of Vignoles in our Morre Vineyard and displays exceptional quality parameters. 1,440 cases produced.

TASTING INFORMATION: Vignoles (veen-yole) is Missouri’s premier white wine grape variety. This rich, full-bodied white wine displays lovely varietal aromas of pineapple, strawberry and lime. Although this wine contains a hint of sweetness, its natural vibrant acidity gives it a delightful, dry palate impression, making it the perfect wine to enjoy as an aperitif or paired with flavorful foods that might overwhelm a more delicate white. (750 ml)

Three Giclee prints by Michigan artist Catherine Tonning-Popowich

Because of her passion and talent for creating wildlife art, Catherine was awarded the 2013 Individual Artist Grant by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. Through this funding, Catherine became the artist in residence at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan. She held wildlife painting classes that were free and open to the public on-site at the zoo. Catherine also completed a series of paintings of ten of the zoo’s animals and held an exhibition of those works in the fall of 2013.

These three prints are from Catherine’s Creative Creature Collection and are mounted on durable gator board. They can be framed or displayed as they are. The lion and tortoise each measure 9 x 9 inches, the peacock 7 x 7.

Washable wool stadium blanket donated on behalf of the South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory.  In honor of our state’s sheep producers, these blankets are part of SDSU’s “Signature Wool Series.”  Designed by students and made from South Dakota wool, proceeds from these items go towards scholarships for students in the ag college at SDSU.

Foundation accomplishments:

 

A primary focus of the Foundation in recent years has been to increase the number of trainee travel awards to assist our future veterinary laboratory diagnosticians to attend and / or make presentations at our annual meeting. AAVLD is partnering with the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine (CPCVM) to send selected DVM students from across the USA to our meeting in 2013.

 



2013 Highlights

·   Graduate student trainee travel awards increased from $1,000 to $1,500 each to more fully pay for travel costs.  Same number of total graduate student trainee travel awards as 2011 and 2012 (9-11 depending upon applicant pool). 

·   CPCVM total funding increased 50% (from $4,000 to $6,000) to increase number of DVM students attending the meeting. 

 


Recent AAVLD Foundation Sponsored Travel Awards:

·   2013- Has selected and is  sending 12 graduate student trainee travel awards plus 15 DVM student travel awards to San Diego this year. The AAVLD Awardees are: Farhad Ahmadi, Mai Yee Mok, Kenneth Kim, Helene Brettschneider, Jingjiao Ma, Bailey Wilberts, Ashley Malmlov, Paulette Suchodolski, Pragathi B. Shridhar, Tuddow Thaiwong, Panayiotis Loukopoulos, Nandita Mirajkar. DVM info coming soon.

·   2012- 9 graduate student awards plus 11 DVM awards

·   2011- 11 graduate student awards plus 6 DVM Student awards
