Kiril Dimitrov, DVM, MS, PhD, joined TVMDL in 2019 as the Virology and Molecular Diagnostics Section Head at the TVMDL-Amarillo location (now Canyon). In 2020, Kiril relocated to College Station and was tasked with the Virology Section Head role. In 2021, Kiril moved to the position of Assistant Agency Director for Microbiology and Research, overseeing the agency’s Bacteriology, Molecular Diagnostics, Serology, Virology, and Research sections in College Station and Canyon. Kiril currently serves as the Agency’s Associate Director. Between 2014 and 2019, Kiril worked as a visiting scientist for the USDA’s National Poultry Research Center in Athens, Georgia. During his tenure at USDA, Kiril worked on the development of rapid diagnostic methods for the constantly evolving avian viruses and characterization of their pathogenicity. He also researched viral molecular epidemiology and evolution and has been extensively working on next-generation sequencing methodologies and bioinformatics. Among his past research interests is the development of vaccines to control avian viral diseases. Previously, Kiril served as an assistant professor and laboratory director at a Diagnostic Laboratory for Newcastle Disease and Avian Influenza in Bulgaria. Since joining TVMDL, Kiril has been a very active AAVLD member. He joined the Laboratory Technology (LTC) and Virology Committees. For two years, Kiril co-chaired the LTC, and during this time, he organized two AAVLD next-generation sequencing symposiums and contributed to the organization of a third. Kiril also invited distinguished speakers to the committee meetings, providing presentations of state-of-the-art methods to members. Kiril is currently serving as an interim representative of Southcentral Region 4 in the AAVLD Executive Board. Kiril is a contributing member of AAVLD, committed to supporting Region 4 (and beyond) laboratories, sharing knowledge and methods with fellow laboratories, and advancing the Association in promoting animal and public health.
